New Northwich Market Now Open

Sixty years after the former Northwich Market opened, a new chapter begins with the opening of a brand-new market at Barons Quay.

The ribbon was cut by Northwich Mayor Councillor Robert Cernik, and Deputy Mayor, Councillor Rachel Waterman, and all the market’s nineteen stalls opened for business.

Occupying a prime corner location within Barons Quay, the new market will offer a significantly improved experience for customers and traders alike with a wider choice of stalls and facilities.

One wall of the market features the sixty-year-old ‘Indoor Market’ sign from the old market which has been restored; plus there are fifty hanging fish mobiles and a large, white-clawed crayfish mobile made from recycled plastic inspired by the nearby River Weaver hanging over the seating area. Eleven local primary schools were involved in the art project – Little Leigh, Whitegate CofE, Witton Church Walk CofE, Hartford Manor, St. Bede’s Catholic, Byley, Antrobus St. Marks, Weaverham Academy, Weaverham Forest, Charles Darwin and Winnington Park Schools.

Councillor Nathan Pardoe, Cabinet Member for Inclusive Economy, Regeneration and Digital Transformation said:

“The new Northwich Market is now open to the public – as a destination to shop, meet and eat. The market has been fully let with a fantastic variety of traders, offering something for everyone, and turns the wishes of Northwich residents for a new market into reality.

“Northwich Market brings something new to Barons Quay, helping to bring more footfall into the town centre. It is a much-improved experience for visitors and traders, and is a fully accessible social space with indoor and outdoor seating, and offers free WiFi and toilets for public use. Best of all, many of the traders are from or have previously traded in Northwich.

“The Council is committed to supporting independent businesses and creating inclusive economic growth, and Northwich Market and its markets across the Borough are an important part of this. Thank you to the traders, staff and contractors for their hard work in bringing Northwich Market to life, together they have created a new market that is fit for the future.”

Four new traders have recently signed up to join the market, enabling the market to be fully let on opening; these are Betty Lemon, Hide & Hands, Sweet Northwich and Thimblewick Gifts.
